Student opportunities database

Welcome to NOAA’s student opportunities database! NOAA has opportunities for students of any level — from kindergarten through high school, undergraduate and graduate, and even recent graduates. Opportunities include one-day events, summer internships at NOAA, multi-year fellowships, and more. Use the filters to narrow your search and find the opportunities that work for you.

If you have issues, feedback, or would like to report incorrect information, please let us know by filling out our feedback form offsite link or sending us an email at education@noaa.gov.

About the filters

Audience

  • The audience filters are divided by grade level. The recent graduate filter includes opportunities for recent graduates from high school and recent graduates from postsecondary degree or certificate programs.

    • Citizen science: Typically unpaid opportunities to participate in the scientific process to address real-world problems. This may include everything from forming questions to collecting or analyzing data and more.
    • Youth program: Opportunities that are targeted at youth audiences and range from camps to ambassador programs and fellowships.
    • Camp: Short-term events usually focused on a specific topic or theme and targeted at youth participants.
    • Event: Single events that may occur annually such as science fairs or outreach events.
    • Contest or competition: Opportunities to submit work that will be judged. These include events like science fairs or art contests and typically include some kind of award.

Citizenship eligibility

  • Filter based on requirements related to citizenship status. “No citizenship requirement” includes opportunities that don’t have any eligibility criteria related to citizenship status.

Application period

  • This filter is by season, with some overlap to account for academic seasons and meteorological seasons. It refers to when the application is open and due, not the opportunity timing.
    • Fall: September, October, November, and December.
    • Winter: December, January, February.
    • Spring: January, February, March, April, May.
    • Summer: June, July, August.

Opportunity location

  • Filter based on where the opportunity occurs. This does not refer to eligibility criteria related to your location.
    • Virtual: Participation is online.
    • Participate locally from anywhere in the U.S.: No travel is required for this opportunity. It may include citizen science or volunteer opportunities you can do in any neighborhood, or even tuition support with no geographic requirement.
    • Regional opportunities: These opportunities have on-site requirements in specific geographic regions. For example, they may include internships limited to NOAA facilities in a certain region or a regional citizen science activity.
    • Participate on-site at locations across the U.S.: These opportunities have on-site options across all regions. For example, the program may include an internship at a NOAA facility with options in most U.S. states.

Tips for using the database

Search for content areas of interest.

NOAA has student opportunities in STEM fields, social science, computer science, education, and more. Try searching for topics of interest to you, like ocean, fish, climate, weather, modeling, or satellite.

Searching for terms that contain more than one word.

Use quotation marks around multiple-word phrases you want to search. For example, searching “climate change” will return opportunities with the term “climate change” in it. If you don’t include quotation marks, it will return opportunities that include either the word “climate” or “change.”
