Long-term shared computational resource access

2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable Submissions

Summary: The NSF-supported XSEDE program has been invaluable for ocean science researchers at institutions that cannot support their own High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources. Broad access beyond R1 institutions and federal research laboratories to computing environments capable of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Machine Learning, should be promoted as part of critical Ocean Science and Technology Infrastructure. Currently, this type of broad access is contingent upon XSEDE's success through NSF award support and funding renewal. I propose that SOST create permanent support to maintain XSEDE eligibility, help-desk, Extended Collaborative Support Services, and other such programs that provide access to researchers at smaller institutions.
