2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable
Summary: Since 2017, I have been the Skipper of Sea Scout Ship 5, a youth led organization under the BSA for boys and girls aged 14--20. We participate in all things Maritime related. After collecting, sorting and documenting boat landing trash for five years (over 33,500 items to date) the crew wanted to be more proactive. With the help of NOAA we received a grant from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and installed a public refillable water station. We had the grand opening on May 21, 2022 inviting many of the associations we have been working with. The next day we were flooded with inquiries about how to join our organization. Our youth want to be involved, there are just not enough organizations or mechanisms for them to connect with. Empower our youth to create change by participating in sustainable community science. Without the MDT data, we would not have noticed that the trash was not going away, that plastics were the worst offender, that there were solutions available but were being underutilized. One thing leads to another.
