2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable Submissions
Summary: Marine debris such as plastic and other material have a detrimental effect on the ocean ecosystem. Therefore, accurate and real-time detection and tracking/predicting the trajectory of marine debris is critical for timely intervention. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can analyze multi-sensor data (e.g., satellite, aerial imagery, underwater sensors) and output decision aids to support these goals. However, computation and connectivity infrastructure constraints in the middle of an ocean pose serious technical challenges. We present a rapidly deployable resilient infrastructure architecture consisting of distributed edge computing and opportunistic wireless networking to solve this problem. This talk is intended for marine scientists, DoD organizations, and S&T policy makers.
