Blueprint for Ocean Climate Action

2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable Submissions

Summary: On World Ocean Day, the Biden-Harris administration committed to developing and implementing America’s first-ever ocean climate plan. The Blueprint for Ocean Climate Action is a series of detailed policy recommendations intended to inform the development of the administration’s plan. A successfully implemented, all-of-government ocean plan can leverage both the mitigation and adaptation power of the ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes and provide important opportunities for the administration to reach its climate and justice goals. The Blueprint–supported by over 90 organizations and businesses nationwide–covers the following ocean climate action topics that will further the
administration’s goals:

  • Expand Responsibly-Sited Offshore Wind
  • Phase Out Offshore Drilling and Support the Just Transition to Renewable Energy
  • Promote Green Shipping and Ports
  • Protect Blue Carbon
  • Reduce Plastic Pollution and Emissions
  • Advance Climate Ready Fisheries
  • End Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing
  • Advance Marine Protected Areas
  • Enhance Coastal Resilience
  • Minimize and Address Ocean Acidification
  • Evaluate Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal
  • Prioritize Public Engagement
