NOAA Fisheries will release a proposed strategy for reducing and preventing bycatch. Bycatch occurs when fishermen catch animals they don’t want, can’t sell, or aren’t allowed to keep.
In 2005, NOAA Fisheries estimated that bycatch accounted for roughly 17 percent of catch in United States commercial fisheries with relevant data. Since then, NOAA and our partners have worked in multiple ways on multiple fronts to reduce bycatch.
Journalists will learn about NOAA Fisheries’ proposed strategy to reduce bycatch, the agency’s bycatch report to Congress issued last week, and ask questions.
