NOAA, AMS to announce findings of State of the Climate in 2016 report

More than 450 scientists from over 60 countries contributed to the State of the Climate in 2016 report. It provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events and other data collected from locations on land, water, ice and in space. It will be released on August 10 as a special edition of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

On Thursday, August 10, scientists will discuss key findings from a peer-reviewed State of the Climate report that examines temperature, precipitation and weather events experienced around the world in 2016. The study will be published in a special edition of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

This 27th annual check-up for the planet is based on contributions from more than 450 scientists representing over 60 countries around the world. It provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, notable weather events and other data collected from locations on land, water, ice, and in space. Some of the climate indicators include greenhouse gases; temperature; precipitation; sea level; sea ice extent; glacier mass; snow cover and tropical cyclones.

Presentations will be given by:

  • Jessica Blunden, Ph.D., climatologist and lead report editor, NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information
  • Gregory C. Johnson, Ph.D., oceanographer and ocean chapter editor, NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory
  • Jeremy Mathis, Ph.D., Director of NOAA Arctic Research Program and Arctic chapter editor, NOAA Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research

  • Robert Dunn, Ph.D., climate scientist and global chapter co-editor, United Kingdom Met Office

In addition, Deke Arndt, chief of the climate monitoring branch at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information will be on the call to answer questions about the report.
