The American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting was held January 10-14, 2016 in New Orleans, LA.
From January 10th -14th, 2016, the 96th annual American Meteorological Society (AMS) Meeting was held at the Ernest M. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA. The AMS Annual Meeting is the world’s largest conference on weather, water and climate. This year, the conference brought together 3,780 professionals and 800 students.
Undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty from the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the NOAA Cooperative Remote Sensing Science & Technology Center (CREST) participated in the meeting. Three EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholars presented their research; Zainab Ali (Atmospheric Science major; North Carolina A&T University) gave an oral presentation entitled “Sticky questions and endless debates: Integrating Social and Behavioral Science into Meteorological Research and Practice”. Jala Morrow (Applied Mathematics major; Jackson State University) and Samuel Oge (Electrical Engineering major; City College of the City University of New York) gave poster presentations on their research.
In addition, the Colour of Weather Diversity Networking Reception celebrated 15 years with record participation. The Colour of Weather was co-founded by NCAS Director Dr. Vernon Morris, and began as an informal social gathering of students and professionals in the atmospheric sciences. It officially became part of the annual AMS program in 2010, and this year the event was attended by NOAA Administrator, Dr. Kathryn Sullivan, NOAA Deputy Administrator, Vice Admiral Manson Brown and Dr. Louis Uccellini, Director of NOAA’s National Weather Service, amongst many other leaders in the government, non-profit and private sectors. Additionally, over 25 academic institutions were represented at the event. Vice Admiral Brown gave remarks to the standing room-only crowd, emphasizing the importance of diversity in the geosciences and encouraging students to network with the various professionals in the room and at the meeting for career guidance and mentorship.

Zainab, an EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholar from the Class of 2015, is an atmospheric science major at North Carolina A&T University, in Greensborough, NC. Zainab's 2016 summer internship with NOAA will be conducted at the National Weather Service Denver/Boulder Forecast Office. The title of her research project is "Quantitative Precipitation Forecast (QPF) Verification on the Colorado Front Range". Nezette Rydell will serve as Zainab's mentor.

Jala, an EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholar from the Class of 2015, is an applied mathematics major at Jackson State University, in Jackson, MS. Jala's 2016 NOAA summer internship project will involve her participating in a Mid-South Tornado Environment research project at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Memphis, Tennessee, under the mentorship of Thomas Salem.
