Inclusive Training & Mentoring Program for Ocean STEM

2022 SOST Opportunities and Actions Roundtable

Summary: We propose to increase blue workforce diversity, equity, and inclusivity through a whole-of-enterprise approach that brings the multi-sectoral ocean STEM community together in a tangible and intentional program. Our proposed program addresses multiple gaps in the pathways into ocean STEM and is unique in three important ways.

First, we will better connect existing programs and opportunities for training and research experience in ocean STEM – and better connect maritime academy, community college, undergraduate, and graduate students to these – thus improving pathways into this field.

Second, we will develop cohorts and peer-networks and provide long-term mentorship and professional development (e.g., networking, grant writing) support to participating students and alumni to lift the barriers commonly faced by groups underrepresented in STEM from undergraduate through their early careers.

Third, the program would establish a dedicated vessel as the nation’s first diversity-centered vessel, putting the DE&I mission first in the conducting of research and other at-sea training. A dedicated vessel will greatly accelerate the pace of progress toward systemic change in ocean science through equitable opportunity and increased access to training in ocean science, while setting an example for at-sea experiences free from harassment and other marginalizing behaviors. Beyond the at-sea experiences, the program would support students development in blue economy skills such as data analysis, visualization, machine learning, technology, and engineering.

The outcome of the program would be a diverse and inclusive blue economy workforce that understands the ocean system, resource sustainability, and the potential of technology-based solutions to ocean, coastal, and climate challenges, and that builds more equitable engagement in the blue economy and trust in science and technology.
