Status Review for the Tope Shark, Galeorhinus galeus, under the Endangered Species Act (ID442)

Description: Following receipt of a petition requesting that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) list the tope shark (Galeorhinus galeus) as a threatened or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), NMFS announced the initiation of a status review for this species. The status review will synthesize the best scientific and commercial data available and present an assessment of the extinction risk for this species. The status review will be documented in a report, which will be subject to peer review and which will inform the decision whether this species warrants protection under the ESA.

If NMFS determines that the species does not warrant listing under the ESA, such decision will be announced in the Federal Register as is not subject to public comment.
