The United States was honored this week at the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York City for its commitment to investing in global science infrastructure that comprehensively monitors the ocean using satellite and marine sensors.
NOAA’s Acting Chief Scientist and Assistant Administrator for NOAA Research Craig McLean accepted the honor on behalf of the United States at a ceremony on June 6, which was organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO offsite link.
The U.S. was one of six nations and two organizations honored as ocean champions for pioneering work in ocean science. Others receiving honors were: Seychelles for innovative financing solutions for ocean science; Morocco for advancing gender equality in ocean science; Norway for boosting capacity in ocean science; Argentina for sustained national investment in ocean science; Portugal for supporting international cooperation in ocean science; the Clean Seas Campaign to reduce ocean plastics; and the Nippon Foundation of Japan for promoting education and outreach on ocean science.
The event was held in conjunction with the Ocean Conference at the United Nations offsite link, a gathering of nations working together to improve the sustainable use of the oceans for economic development.
