2017 SOS Workshop: Planning your trip

Information on venue, transportation, hotel, and local attractions

Venue and dates

The workshop will be held at the Detroit Zoo from Tuesday, April 25 through Thursday, April 27. There are also optional “pre-workshop” sessions being offered on Monday, April 24 in the afternoon. Note: you must register for the pre-workshops in advance.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at the Zoo each day of the workshop. There will also be an evening reception at the Zoo on Tuesday, April 25.

 

Transportation

If you are arriving by plane, you will arrive at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW). There are limited ground transportation options in Detroit (no Super Shuttle, etc.) and the few that exist can be expensive. Therefore, thanks to support from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, we are pleased to offer complimentary bus transportation to and from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) on a limited basis. We encourage you to consider the times the bus will make airport pick ups and drop offs when you make your flight arrangements.

Airport Bus Schedule

  • April 24th 3pm, 6pm, 8pm pickups from DTW to Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center
  • April 27th 4pm pickup from Detroit Zoo to DTW
  • April 28th 7am, 10am pickup from Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center to DTW

We will also provide daily transportation from the hotel to the Zoo and back.

Workshop Bus Schedule

  • Will be published in March 2017.

If you will be driving to the Detroit Zoo for the workshop, please contact us at sos.workshop@noaa.gov to inquire about parking arrangements at the Zoo.

 

Hotel

Workshop participants should book and pay for their own hotel rooms. A block of rooms has been set aside for reservations at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The block rate is $139 + taxes and fees for a standard room (one or two beds). To reserve your room, please follow this dedicated linkoffsite link. Room reservations must be made by March 23, 2017. After this date, the block rate may no longer be available.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is part of a large complex that has restaurants and shops. Also, there are several other eateries, etc. in walking distance (see Local Attractions section below). The hotel is approximately 13 miles away from the Detroit Zoo. Workshop registration includes transportation to and from the hotel to the Zoo daily.

Travel Support

Deadline for requesting support: February 2, 2017

Through the support of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation,offsite link we are able to offer partial travel support to a limited number of persons from U.S.-based SOS Network member institutions. For each awarded person, the travel support will consist of up to four (4) nights of stay at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. This covers the nightly hotel rate ($139) + tax only. Travelers will be responsible for all other costs.

Eligibility

Eligible persons are from a U.S.-based SOS Network member institution that does not currently have an award from NOAA providing funds for travel to this Workshop. The list of all Network members is available at: http://www.noaa.gov/sosnetwork/members

Federal employees and persons from non-U.S. institutions are not eligible for travel support.

Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee travel support funding. Because there may be more requests submitted than funds available, not all applicants will be selected to receive travel support.

Applicants will receive an email response informing them if they have been selected to receive travel support by Thursday, February 16. You may make your hotel reservation at any time (before or after February 2).
