The Singapore Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and NOAA signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance bilateral cooperation on environmental management and climate protection today.

The MOU was signed in Singapore by Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Ms. Grace Fu and Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, Ph.D.

Under the MOU, both sides will strengthen cooperation on a range of environmental and climate issues, including climate monitoring and prediction, coastal science and modelling to support coastal protection and flood resilience efforts, earth observations for environmental monitoring and heat resilience. The MSE, including its Statutory Boards — the National Environment Agency, PUB (the national water agency) and NOAA will also conduct technical exchanges, information sharing and joint publications and projects under this MOU.

“We’re delighted to formalize our partnership with Singapore’s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment,” said Spinrad. “Globally, we just experienced the hottest year on record, and we need to work collaboratively to address the impacts of our changing climate. We look forward to sharing some of our successes and to learning from each other.”\

"Singapore and the U.S. enjoy long standing cooperation on environmental sustainability, underpinned by a shared commitment to climate and environmental action," said Minister Fu. "This MOU will provide more opportunities for such cooperation, and we look forward to working closely with NOAA to support our efforts in preparing for climate change.”

The MSE is committed to providing Singaporeans with a clean and sustainable environment, and resilient supplies of safe food and water. MSE works alongside its three statutory boards — the National Environment Agency (NEA), PUB (Singapore’s National Water Agency) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) — to achieve this mission through innovation, technology and vibrant partnerships with the private, public and people (3P) sectors.

Climate, weather, and water affect all life on our ocean planet. NOAA’s mission is to understand and predict our changing environment, from the deep sea to outer space, and to manage and conserve America’s coastal and marine resources.
