Data in the Classroom

Student-friendly interface combines a system for accessing data with structured lesson plans that model how to use online data in the classroom. The modules address authentic research questions and include stepped levels of engagement similar to the Bloom’s Taxonomy hierarchy. Modules are completely student-directed and can involve complex inquiry investigations. There are four modules including El Niño, Water Quality, Ocean Acidification, and Sea Level Modules, which make use of historical and real-time NOAA data.

Estuaries 101 Real-time Data

The goal of Estuaries 101 is for students and teachers to become more ocean literate through increasing their knowledge of coastal and estuarine science and how estuaries affect their daily lives. The curriculum modules in Estuaries 101 feature hands-on learning experiments, field work, interactive maps, and data explorations using real NOAA data. The high school curriculum features earth, life, and physical science modules and uses Google Earth to explore estuaries. The middle school curriculum is arranged around the following themes: dynamic ecosystems, abundance of life, research and monitoring, natural resources, and human impact.

Fishing for Information

This lesson was developed in order to teach students how to access and analyze the Alaska Groundfish Survey Data available from NOAA Fisheries. The lesson guides students in developing a research question, walks them through the data acquisition process, and requires that students use evidence to draw conclusions. The lesson is standards-based and developed with an AP Environmental Science class in mind, though it could be applicable to other science classes.

NOAA View Data Imagery Portal

The NOAA View Data Imagery Portal provides access to maps of NOAA data from a variety of satellite, model, and other analysis sources. The user can investigate various datasets related to the ocean, atmosphere, land, cryosphere, and climate. The datasets cover multiple years and can be viewed as animations over weeks, months, or years. It is also possible to mouse over the maps and inspect individual data values at any point. The user can also download images from the site and create files usable on Google Earth. There are no associated lessons; however, the site is very user-friendly.

Analyzing Ocean Tracks: Investigating Marine Migrations in a Changing Ocean

Ocean Tracks uses data from the Tagging of Pacific Predators Project (TOPP) and was created by EDC’s Oceans of Data Institute and Stanford University with funding from the National Science Foundation. Students can use this site to view animal tracks from a wide variety of species. In addition to an interactive map, this site provides a teacher guide with five modules including an introduction and the following topics: prey maps, biological hotspots, human impacts, and conservation strategy. Each module comes with a set of teacher instructions and a PowerPoint to guide students through the module. There is also a student friendly library that provides learning content on a variety of topics relevant to the data provided on the website.

NOAA Digital Coast Data: Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer

The sea level rise viewer is an interactive map where users can display potential future sea levels and view simulations of sea level rise at a local landmark. By moving a slider bar, the user can slowly increase sea level up to 6 ft. There are overlays of social and economic data that can be mapped onto potential sea level rise. By using these overlays, a community can see the potential impact that sea level rise has on vulnerable people and businesses. This map is geared toward coastal managers and scientists but the interface is user-friendly. There are no accompanying lessons.

Integrated Ocean Observing Systems (IOOS) Data Portals

The regional coastal and ocean observing systems provide data to characterize the past, present, and future state of the marine environment. These characterizations include analyses of historical data, alerts based on current conditions, and forecasts of future conditions based on model predictions. The IOOS website contains links to all regional sites including Alaska, the Caribbean, Central and Northern California, Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest, NE Atlantic, Pacific Islands, Southern California, and SE Atlantic. The Pacific Northwest’s NANOOS site contains the NVS Data Explorer , which allows the user to view data from buoys, gliders, satellites, fixed shore platforms, river gauges, cruises, land stations, and models - all in one place. Measurements such as air temperature, wave period, barometric pressure, water temperature, wave height, wind speed, etc. can be obtained from the site.

Tides and Currents Data

The Tides and Currents station map can be used to locate stations that provide water levels, meteorological observations, and current observations. The map is interactive and allows the user to click on a station to see real-time measurements. High and low tide and graphs of measurements over time can be obtained by clicking on a station.

National Buoy Data Center

The National Buoy Data Center provides buoy information from around the world. Users can view both recent and historical information as well stations that are in "tsunami event mode". Both graphs and tables of data can be obtained for water column height at each buoy location.

River Observations

On this site, the user can view hydrograph and summary data (flood stage, current height) from river gauges across the country. River forecasts and experimental long-range flood risk can also be viewed. It is also possible to download KMZ files for Google Earth of observed and forecasted river conditions.

NOAA Environmental Visualization Laboratory

NOAA’s Environmental Visualization Lab creates a variety of timely satellite images, videos, and visualizations. The home page has an image of the day that relates to a current meteorological event. The site contains images and videos pertaining to current and historical severe weather events, disasters, hurricanes, climate, oceans, atmosphere, and remote sensing.

Alaska Fisheries Science Center Groundfish Survey Data

This website consists of an interactive map where groundfish survey data from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center can be obtained for a particular station on the map grid or downloaded as a file that can be used with a spreadsheet program. Data from 1982 to present day are available for the Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea Slope, Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Northern Bering Sea Shelf, and Gulf of Alaska.

Teaching with Great Lakes Science

Teaching Great Lakes Science is a site that connects educators to lessons, activities, datasets, and guided inquiry. These resources are multidisciplinary and easy-to-navigate. Modules can be mixed and matched based on needs. Data collected from buoys, satellites, and other monitoring devices are incorporated and customized for use in the classroom. These data are compiled into a usable spreadsheet format. Site also includes a link to Great Lakes FieldScope, a project developed out of a partnership between Michigan Sea Grant and National Geographic. This is a web-based geospatial tool where students can explore data layers such as: rivers and streams, watershed boundaries, water depth, political boundaries, elevation, and land cover.

Using Real-time Tide Data

This lesson is for students to use real-time tide data to develop a plan for the best time to excavate a ship wreck. While completing the lesson, students will be able to answer basic questions about tides, how to predict their occurrence, and how to apply the information. As a result, students will create a chart to display the movement of tides and extrapolate the data to forecast future events.

GLOBE Data Visualization

The GLOBE Data Visualization Tool gives students and teachers access to all of the data collected and entered online by GLOBE schools. Eventually data from all 56 protocols will be accessible. This website also provides access to long-term air temperature and precipitation data from the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN). These data are provided as a Google Earth KML file, which displays reporting stations of long-term air temperature and precipitation data from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Data can be downloaded to use in a spreadsheet program. While lessons for data collection and other activities are a part of the GLOBE website, specific lessons for manipulation of this data are not provided at this link.
