NOAA is responsible for conserving, protecting and recovering marine mammals, sea turtles and other endangered marine life. NOAA researchers contributed to locating and identifying animals affected by oil following the Deepwater Horizon spill. Information about species and numbers of wildlife collected during these efforts is summarized in daily and summary reports.
"Almost immediately after the explosion, we began collecting baseline data. We conducted overflights almost daily to monitor marine mammals, turtles, specific fisheries, wetlands and marshes. NOAA research ships initiated ongoing investigations of the impact of the oil on marine mammals and fisheries."
