NOAA prepared maps of dissolved oxygen levels as part of a comprehensive monitoring effort.  A decrease in the typical level of oxygen dissolved in water could be due to the presence of microbes that use oxygen as they break down oil; therefore, low dissolved oxygen is used as an indicator of the potential presence of oil.
