Announcing the 2018 NOAA undergraduate scholars

This year, the NOAA Office of Education selected 150 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholars and eight Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholars, making 2018 the second largest NOAA undergraduate scholarship class. The NOAA Office of Education notified the NOAA undergraduate scholarship awardees during the month of April.

NOAA reviewed nearly 600 applications for these two competitive scholarships. Collectively, NOAA undergraduate scholarship programs selected scholars studying at 100 different campuses in 35 U.S. states, as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands. The new NOAA scholars are rising juniors studying a broad range of disciplines including biology, climatology, marine science, biochemistry, cell biology, environmental science, meteorology, and atmospheric science.

The Director of NOAA Education, Louisa Koch, remarked, "NOAA welcomes the 2018 undergraduate scholars, an accomplished group of students ready to investigate our changing environment, from forecasting severe storms, to monitoring our climate, to managing the nation’s fisheries, and to restoring our coasts. We are proud to help educate the next generation of scientists, stewards, and educators."

NOAA welcomes the 2018 Undergraduate Scholars, an accomplished group of students ready to investigate our changing environment.

The 2018 NOAA undergraduate scholars will travel to Silver Spring, Maryland, for orientation from May 29 - 31, 2018. During orientation, they will meet NOAA scientists and their peers and learn about the extensive NOAA internship opportunities available to them. Applications will open for the 2019 scholarship class in September 2018 and close at the end of January 2019.

NOAA Hollings Scholars Michaela Lawrence and Cheyenne Maio-Silva, working at the University of South Florida College of Marine Sciences as part of a partnership with NOAA, IOOS and SECOORA. Their internships were focused on the 2017 Coastal Ocean Monitoring and Prediction System (COMPS) Mooring Cruise, involving setup, deployment, and analysis of in-situ oceanography instruments. They were part of the field operations team and also got their American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scientific dive

Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship

The Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship was established in 2005, in honor of Senator Ernest F. Hollings, who was well known for supporting ocean policy and conservation. The Hollings Scholarship includes a two-year academic scholarship and a summer internship opportunity for full-time undergraduate STEM and education majors. Students apply in their second year of undergraduate study and must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Scholarship recipients receive an academic award of $9,500 per year, as well as a 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship at any NOAA facility nationwide, with all travel expenses included in the award. Scholars receive funding to present their NOAA research projects at up to two national scientific conferences.

Educational Partnership Program Undergraduate Scholarship

The Educational Partnership Program with Minority-Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI) was established in 2001 to support the training of postsecondary students pursuing degrees that directly support NOAA’s mission while attending a Minority-Serving Institution. The EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholarship includes a two year academic scholarship and two paid summer internship opportunities. EPP/MSI Undergraduate Scholars must have and maintain a 3.2 GPA per term and cumulatively. Scholars receive an academic stipend of $9,500 per year, and funding to present the results of the research they conducted during their summer internships at two national scientific conferences.
